"The key to success in life is using the good thoughts of wise
people."
- Leo Tolstoy.
It is not often when a leader in an organization can thrive without
the support of his or her peers, co-workers and others. Developing
a support system for yourself as you progress in your career can
be critical to your success. The most successful leaders have
identified and developed a circle of support to fill the roles of
mentor, role model, and peer.
A mentor is someone who will nurture you through a transition, a
project or throughout your career. It's a person who can help guide
you, and be an ear for your ideas and concerns. When you
recognize another leader who you feel would be a good mentor or
role model for you, approach him or her and ask if they would be
your mentor. Don't be afraid - they may say no, but in most
cases, they will be flattered that you have recognized them as
someone who may be able to help. A mentor can be a valuable
resource in many situations, and every leader should search for
one.
As a leader, it will also be extremely valuable for you to develop a
support system among your peers. I would bet that other
managers in your department or company are struggling with some
of the same employee issues and career concerns as you.
Sharing best practices among peers and incorporating their ideas
are great ways to improve the way you lead your team.
Work teams also form a very strong support system. A group of
people, all working toward the same goal of solving a complex
issue, will interact and discover ways to assist each other
consistently in the workplace. It can be a very powerful experience.
Who do you turn to when you need advice or someone to bounce
off some ideas? It might be an individual or a group of people.
Either way, you will find a support system critical to maintaining
your well-being and for your career progression.
